Dr. Firehiwot Girma Dires is a pioneering electrical engineer and researcher with over 20 years of experience in the energy sector. She is the first Ethiopian woman to earn a PhD in Electro-Hydropower Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, receiving an excellent distinction.
Her research focuses on hydropower systems, where she has significantly contributed to sustainable energy solutions. A notable achievement is her role in establishing the Reppie Waste-to-Energy Plant in Addis Ababa, the first facility in Africa to convert municipal waste into electricity. This project addresses critical waste management issues while promoting renewable energy generation, setting a benchmark for similar initiatives across the continent.

Long-Term Hydropower Planning for Ethiopia: A Rolling Horizon Stochastic Programming Approach with Uncertain Inflow

All long-term hydropower planning problems require a forecast of the inflow during the planning period. However, it is challenging to forecast inflows for a year or more accurately. Therefore, it is common to use stochastic models considering the uncertainties of the inflow. This paper compares deterministic and stochastic models in a weekly rolling horizon framework considering inflow uncertainty. The stochastic model is tested in both a risk-neutral and a risk-averse version.

In this paper, we have derived a method to generate a Synthetic historical inflow time series, a technique to identify the stochastic process and generate random inflow scenarios that can be used to develop a Stochastic planning model for the Ethiopian power system for proper generation scheduling and water management in the reservoirs.

This paper presents a long-term deterministic linear simulation model for the Ethiopian hydropower system, intending to utilize the water stored in the rainy season throughout the year with minimum load shedding.
